My favourite blogs

It’s the day for Blog Love. Day 2 at the  Write Tribe Festival of Words asks us to talk about our favourite blogs.

This one’s a toughie for me. There really are too many to choose from. The ones I go to most often are of course the mommy blogs, then there crafty blogs, food blogs, movie blogs and some political and social ones too.. I’m completely lost.
As usual when I cannot think clearly I make out a list.

Here are my top four

1. The Mad Momma at themadmomma.wordpress.com/
I read the madmomma for her non-nonsense yet sensitive approach to parenting and life. I love the warmth that comes through in her blog. I love the way she celebrates the differences of her kids. There’s humour and philosophy amidst the daily chatter, though I wouldn’t mind that either.

2. The Orange Rhino at theorangerhino.com
Here’s another amazing mum…. to four boys. She’s on a 365 day no-yelling journey! That in itself is miraculous enough for me to want to read what she writes. Add to it liberal doses of humour and straight from the heart talk and the blog’s a total delight.  I’ve blogged about her earlier too because I find her such an inspiration.

3. The life and times of an Indian Homemaker at http://indianhomemaker.wordpress.com/
You couldn’t have missed this one if you’ve been blogging for sometime. I love the issues taken up and enjoy this perspective of happenings around us.

4. Artsy Crafty mum at artsycraftsymum.com
This where I turn to for all things artsy craftsy. Fun crafts, school projects, fancy dress costumes, birthday party decor it’s all here. In desperate times I’ve even dropped her a mail and have always had help.

B has to be for blogging

Today I do a ‘listicle’ (yeah that’s a legitimate word for an article written out as a list) on

5 reasons I love blogging

1. I can write anything I please..
…absolutely anything. That’s a freedom I never had in my job as a journalist. I can write at my whim in my time, or not write at all if I so please. Interestingly, it’s this freedom that pushes me to commit to a certain deadline and stick with some kind of a schedule. Paradoxical isn’t it?

2. It kept my passion for writing alive
… and made me better at it. Over the last few years I’ve tried my hand at fiction, flash fiction, even a tiny bit of poetry. How cool is that!! I find myself trying to think out of the box, to look at things from varied perspectives. I feel I’ve grown as a writer.

3. It made me more observant
I find things and people more interesting. I listen more.. after all there can be a story anywhere. When I’m out waiting – at the dentist’s or in the supermarket queue I consciously do not reach out for my phone to while away time. I look at and interact more with people, strangers. It’s made me a friendlier person. Also, I find myself reaching out for the camera more often.

4. It got me friends
..on the Net, lots of them. Some are smart, some emotional, some super organised, some completely scatterbrained but all very very creative, supportive and warm. Mercifully I’ve been spared the Net trolls. I haven’t met a single one of them! And you know the best part? I carry my friends in my iPad.

5. It makes me a happier person
Can anything beat that? I started blogging after I had kids. Stuck at home, overworked and harried, blogging helped me retain my sanity and sense of humour. It brought me friends and advice and support. I wrote about it earlier here. When I blog about something happy it remains with me longer. When I blog about something not so happy I find understanding and that makes me feel better too. And then there are the comments. Only a blogger will know what a high they bring.

So keep blogging friends and keep dropping by. Oh and do not forget to leave a comment.. remember 5 (above)? 😀

A revival

Her hands full of soap suds she worked her way through the pile of vessels in the sink. Her mind wandered off to other piles that need attention. The pile of clothes to go in the machine, the pile of ironing to be put away, another pile yet to be ironed, the pile of books that needed sorting, the pile of toys to be cleared up, …  Then there were her ‘happy’ piles – the piles of books to be read, the piles of half finished crafts to be completed, the piles of cookery books needing to be explored.

NO, don’t even go there, she told herself, sternly. Don’t think any of it . Not now, Not just yet. It could all wait. It had to.

There was something else, something far more important, that needed attention. Someone was dying and she had to do something, fast. After all it was she who had brought her into this world. Now, it was only she who could save her. She was special. Boy! was she special… a friend.. nope.. not just a friend.. best friend, confidante, counsellor. Just thinking of her made her smile. She hadn’t seen her friend in weeks… it seemed like ages. And now she was dying. She had to rush to her friend. Everything else could wait.. work, kids, Husband.

She put away the last plate, rinsed and dried her hands. Then she walked off to her study, switched on the computer and started typing. She had to save her blog from dying.

HAARAM.COM, STOP POSTING OUR POSTS ON YOUR SITE WITHOUT OUR PERMISSION!

A bunch of us bloggers have noticed that you have listed our blogs and have been copying our entire posts on to your site for which we neither signed up nor gave explicit permission. Hence would appreciate if you could stop doing that and take our blogs off your site ASAP.

Consider this a gentle reminder from our end..for now.

We may not be so gentle the next time, for this is a serious issue of copyright violation..
Thank you.

Birthday bumps

A tier for each year.
Pic courtesy: Google pics

You turned six, yesterday and once again I forgot. I have wronged you dear blog, grossly. Never, once in these six years have I acknowledged your birthday. How callous is that! I thought this year would be different. Reading a birthday post at momofrs’ I thought I’d have a bash for you. I even planned a gift — a brand new design or a super colourful header. However that was not to be. Belated happy birthday to you, my best friend, my confidante.

Thank you…
for being there when I needed you
for sitting quietly when I didn’t
for waiting patiently during my summer disappearances
for listening to me uncomplainingly… rants, ramblings, babbles, gushes and all.

and above all,
for connecting me to so many many wonderful people

THANK YOU.

PS: Hope you enjoyed the cake.
